WHAT IS EGG DONATION?

Egg donation, or donor egg IVF (deIVF), is an assisted reproduction treatment which is based on in vitro fertilisation (IVF). It offers women who are unable to get pregnant with their own eggs, the chance to achieve pregnancy using eggs from an anonymous donor.

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE OVOCLINIC FOR MY EGG DONATION TREATMENT?

At our Ovoclinic centre of assisted reproduction, we are specialists in egg donation treatments. Our success rates speak for themselves – 83% success in terms of positive beta hCG+ in women with an average age of 41.3 years old and transfer of 2 blastocysts. Furthermore, we collaborate with Ovobank, Europe’s first egg bank, which helps us to optimise donor egg in vitro fertilisation treatments.

Ovobank has a large donor pool, which makes it easier to find the right donor for each patient, choosing from a wide variety of phenotypes. Donors must pass a strict selection process, from which only 30% of donor applicants are accepted due to our rigorous selection protocols.

Who is it for?

  • Women with insufficient ovarian reserve or quality.
  • Premature menopause.
  • Repeated spontaneous miscarriages associated with poor egg quality.
  • Previous failed treatments in which an egg cause is suspected.
  • Genetic diseases in women that cannot be ruled out using PGD.

HOW IS THE SELECTION OF DONORS FOR AN EGG DONATION TREATMENT?

Donor selection is based on two main criteria:

The donor must have a compatible blood group with the patient or her partner and must have similar physical characteristics to the recipient.

At Ovoclinic we use Ovomatch, a facial recognition technology that compares the reference points of the face so that the donor not only has similar general physical characteristics (hair colour, eye colour, etc.) but also similar facial features.

In addition, if you wish, a genetic compatibility test (GCT) can be performed to reduce the risk of the baby developing genetic diseases, being able to study more than 300 pathologies. For this study the male partner or the male donor must carry out this same genetic test.

After this first phase, the egg donor must also meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 33 years old.
  • Psychological assessment by a mental health expert.
  • No personal or family history of serious hereditary diseases.
  • No history of gynaecological pathology.
  • Not a carrier of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Genetic testing ruling out more than 30 recessive diseases, including the most frequent in the population.

THE STEPS AND DURATION OF DONOR EGG IVF TREATMENT

In the first visit to Ovoclinic we will study your case and design a personalised treatment that adapts to your needs.

In addition, we will use the Ovomatch technology to choose the egg donor.

The future mother will receive a simple treatment to prepare the endometrium for the embryo in the embryo transfer.

The medication is usually taken orally or using patches, and works to make the endometrium grow. After approximately 10 – 15 days, if the endometrium is ready, the fertilisation of the eggs and the subsequent embryo transfer is programmed.

Before this, the patient must have progesterone added to the treatment, to imitate that which occurs in a natural cycle.

In egg donation with fresh eggs, the donor and recipient must be available to start the treatment at the same time. However, when using frozen donor eggs, this synchronization is not necessary, therefore reducing waiting times.

In this third step, the eggs are fertilised with either partner, or donor, sperm. The resulting embryos are grown in special incubators, which mimic the conditions found inside the uterus, in terms of temperature, humidity and concentration of gases, until they reach blastocyst stage at around five or six days.

Once the embryo culture is complete, the specialists select the best quality embryo for transfer into the patients uterus. The remaining embryos can be frozen (vitrified) for future attempts.

The final step of the treatment, where the patient has a pregnancy test to see if they are expecting a baby. This is where the Ovoclinic Pregnancy and Live Birth Guarantee Plans are at their most important.

For the future mother’s peace of mind, as well as our Ovoclinic pregnancy guarantee plans, we have rates of over 80% success in terms of clinical pregnancy in our egg donation treatments.

FAQ

HOW MANY EGGS DO YOU RECEIVE IN EGG DONATION?

The number of eggs you usually receive in egg donation is on average 11, but varies from case to case. It must be borne in mind that only eggs in the correct stage of maturation can be used for fertilisation.

HOW MANY ATTEMPTS CAN BE MADE WITH DONATED EGGS?

Generally, only one attempt is needed to achieve the objective, as the success rates of this treatment are so high. In the case that one cycle is not enough, within 3 – 4 cycles there is almost total probability of success.

HOW LONG DOES ENDOMETRIAL PREPARATION TAKE FOR EGG DONATION?

Endometrial preparation is one of the first steps in donor egg IVF and takes approximately 10 – 15 days. This phase can be extended if, during the process, the endometrium has not developed sufficiently and is not ready to receive the embryo.

Will I be able to know who the donor is? Will the donor know who my child is?

Law 14/2006 describes that egg donation must be anonymous, so the identity of the donor is completely confidential, in the same way that the donor will not have the right to know the identity of the born child. There is also no possibility of the born child finding out who the donor was years later.

Only exceptionally, in circumstances that pose a certain danger to the life or health of the child, the identity of the donors may be revealed, provided that such disclosure is essential.

The only information we can give about the donor is important information regarding pregnancy, such as age.

What is epigenetics? Will my egg donor born child inherit anything from me?

There are many studies currently on epigenetics. According to these, although the genetic information of the embryo would come from the donor, during pregnancy, the mother could modulate that genetic information. These processes occur through the exchange that takes place while the baby is in the womb and consist of a series of biochemical signals that can activate or inhibit certain genes of the embryo.

WHAT IS EMBRYO VITRIFICATON OR FREEZING?

Vitrification is the technique used for embryo or egg freezing. The aim of vitrification is to preserve the embryos for future use (transfers) in the case that the first attempt at the egg donation treatment is not successful.

What is genetic grief?

For many couples who have to resort to donated gametes (either sperm or egg), it is difficult to accept that their child will not have their genetic heritage. This completely normal emotional reaction is what is called genetic grief.

Talking openly about the doubts with professionals, maintaining communication with your partner and resorting, if necessary, to professional support such as our psychologist will help to accept these feelings, get excited again, and start again on the journey to parenthood.

Is there a waiting list for egg donation?

At Ovoclinic we are part of Ovobank, with multiple centres nationwide and a very high number of donors, so we do not have waiting lists to find the ideal donor for each patient.

WHAT ARE THE SUCCESS RATES FOR DONOR EGG IVF?

The success rates for egg donation are around 80% on the first try, as such it is very possible to become pregnant at the first attempt. Furthermore, the chances of success can increase with the number of cycles performed, arriving at percentages of success of between 90 – 95%.
