Over the last few decades, the concept of motherhood as a concept has evolved enormously. Thanks to medical advances and the practice of assisted reproduction clinics, there are different ways of creating a family that seemed impossible and unthinkable years ago. The ROPA method or being a single mother are some of the most modern options available to women who are far from traditional.
Fortunately, becoming a mother can depend solely on a woman’s decision. Today, being a mother is possible without the presence of the father figure, so there is total independence for the woman, more empowered and courageous.
What is lone motherhood?
By single motherhood we mean a woman’s choice to conceive a child without the contribution of a partner. This can be done through treatments such as artificial insemination with a donor or in vitro fertilisation with donor sperm. In either case, donor sperm will be needed.
This decision, always based on the deepest conviction and desire to have a child, is becoming increasingly common among young women or even among adult women who, for various reasons, do not have a partner, but do wish to become mothers. Thanks to scientific progress all this is possible.
María Casado, a voice in favour of single motherhood
Maria Casado, Spanish TV presenter and journalist, patient of Ovoclinic with whom she had her daughter Daniela, supports and encourages empowered women who do not depend on anyone if they want to achieve the dream of becoming a mother. As she herself says, she tried it on her own:
“Facing motherhood alone is one of the options I have been closest to. In fact, I tried it myself. Probably because I have the example of my mother who brought me up on her own. My situation changed, although I, for example, am not afraid of single motherhood“, said the well-known presenter, who lives in Malaga.
For her, this option is important and should be taken into account. Today, women are independent and free in all senses, even to have a child by their own decision and without finding anyone: “It is one of the options to take into account, it is a medical advance that we must take advantage of. There is no reason to wait to find the ideal partner. You have to think about it, and if it’s the right time, go ahead. Motherhood is for the brave in all circumstances”.
What treatments or techniques are needed?
There are several possible alternatives for women who want to become single mothers. Although sperm from a donor is obligatory, there are two techniques that make it possible:
Artificial insemination with donor:
This assisted reproduction technique is less complex and more natural than others. It is ideal for women who have NO fertility problems and whose sole purpose is to become a mother alone. This practice consists of introducing the sperm of an anonymous donor directly into the woman’s uterus during her most fertile days (this is known from different tests).
The aim is therefore to facilitate the encounter between egg and sperm without the need for sexual intercourse or fertilisation in a laboratory.
IVF with donor sperm
This technique is more advanced. It is used when there is, unlike artificial insemination with a donor, a scenario of infertility or if other treatments such as the previous one have not been successful.
In this case, the fertilisation of the egg is carried out in the laboratory, joining the woman’s egg with the man’s sperm, in this case the donor, anonymous or not depending on the legislation of the different countries.
Once the embryo is properly formed in the laboratory and evolves correctly, it is transferred to the woman’s uterus to try to achieve pregnancy. This technique is usually recommended for women over 38 years of age and who suffer from low ovarian reserve or who have suffered failed insemination attempts.
Another option that can be decisive, although it involves more forethought, is fertility preservation. This is freezing your eggs at an early age so that you can decide in the future whether you wish to become pregnant.
