Endometriosis, a silent passenger

paciente medico endometriosis

If in a normal afternoon a woman gathered with nine other friends, the statistic says that one of them would suffer from endometriosis, most likely without knowing it. But what is endometriosis and why is it so unknown even though it is so common? This disease is characterised by the presence and development of endometrial tissue outside the uterus that generates intense pain, especially during menstruation. The problem is precisely the widespread belief that the period must always hurt a lot, but it is not true.

How does it affect fertility?

Endometriosis appears in the first five causes of female sterility. According to the SEF (Spanish Fertility Society), 5-15% of couples suffer from sterility due to this disease. In fact, many women discover that they suffer from it only when they start to investigate why they cannot get pregnant. In less complicated cases, an artificial insemination treatment (IUI) may be sufficient to get pregnant, whereas, in the most serious cases IVF or ICSI (In Vitro Fertilization) (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) will be necessary.

In addition to other symptoms, it causes pain in the pelvic area, backaches, stomach-aches, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, exhaustion and intestinal problems – all problems that are generally associated with the period. It is a chronic disease, that is to say that even if it has no cure, there are methods to alleviate and contain it treatments with oral medication, injections or with a surgical procedure.
