Endometriosis: foods to relieve discomfort

endometriosis blog

Endometriosis is a chronic disease suffered by many women that directly affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic cavity and, therefore, often affects their fertility. It is a condition in which a tissue similar to the one that lines the inside of the uterus called “endometrium” implants outside this organ. Some of the main symptoms are severe menstrual pain, discomfort after intercourse and severe pelvic pain. Thanks to assisted reproduction treatments, such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), many women with endometriosis are able to become pregnant.

A healthy diet and lifestyle are essential for any type of disease. In the case of endometriosis, reducing the intake of foods with a high estrogenic load can improve those discomforts related to inflammation.

“ENEMY” FOODS FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS

To reduce inflammation and hormonal interaction in the body, it is preferable to avoid the following foods:

  • Processed products
  • Milk and dairy products
  • Industrial pastries
  • Sugar
  • Coffee
  • Hydrogenated fats
  • Sugary – carbonated beverages
  • Alcohol
ENDOMETRIOSIS-FRIENDLY FOODS

A balanced diet such as the Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables, fruits, fresh vegetables, olive oil, gluten-free cereals, etc., will be key to relieving the pain caused by endometriosis due to its great anti-inflammatory potential.

It is also important to consume foods rich in vitamin E, fatty acids rich in omega 3, and increase foods rich in vitamin D.

  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Vegetables with a bitter taste
  • Cabbages
  • Onions, leeks, and garlic
  • Celery
  • Mushrooms
  • Seeds (pumpkin, flax, hemp, chia…)
  • Nuts
  • Fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines…)

In short, following a correct diet can help you minimize the hormonal imbalance, abdominal swelling, pain, or digestive problems caused by endometriosis.
