Will I be able to live a normal life during IVF treatment?

consejos FIV

When a patient visits a fertility clinic for the first time to begin treatment, it’s common for her to have plenty of questions and doubts that need to be addressed for peace of mind and confidence. This sea of uncertainties often arises even before starting the process. Some of these concerns are frequently repeated among patients. For example, those who choose In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) often ask: Can I live a normal life during treatment?

The answer is: “Yes, you can”, but with certain limitations. After an embryo transfer—following the union of egg and sperm in the laboratory—one word often comes up: rest. In reality, strict rest is not necessary, and patients can resume normal daily activities about half an hour after the embryo is placed in the uterus, since this is a painless process. That said, here are some practical tips to keep in mind.

Avoid heavy lifting

During In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), it’s recommended to avoid lifting heavy weights that may require excessive effort. However, it’s perfectly fine to handle lighter loads that do not involve significant strain.

Don’t be afraid to carry a reasonable weight that doesn’t demand too much physical force.

Avoid intense exercise

It’s important to avoid high-intensity workouts after undergoing embryo transfer. But this should not be confused with the idea of avoiding all kinds of exercise. Quite the opposite.

In fact, low-impact physical activities such as walking or swimming are encouraged. Relaxation exercises—like adapted yoga—are also highly recommended, as they help reduce stress levels.

Minimize stress as much as possible

Once the embryo has successfully implanted in the uterus, it’s time to wait for the pregnancy test results. This waiting period, which lasts about 12–15 days, is commonly known as the two-week wait.

During this time, it’s normal for anxiety and stress to rise considerably. However, high stress and anxiety levels are not beneficial for the patient or the success of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

It’s important to maintain your normal life and keep your mind busy. Reading, listening to music, practicing light exercise, or doing yoga… any pastime will help lower stress levels and keep you calm.

Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption

Alcohol and tobacco consumption directly affect embryo development. While there are no scientific studies confirming that strict rest is necessary during the process, there is clear evidence of the negative impact of alcohol and smoking on fetal development and fertility in general.

That’s why we strongly recommend avoiding alcohol and tobacco, both before and during fertility treatments. In addition, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet will also support the success of embryo implantation.
